Douglas Barrett is an artist, composer, and theorist on the subjects of music, contemporary art, culture, and politics. His artistic projects combine approaches from visual art and music to address issues related to identity, temporality, property, authorship, and exchange. Barrett’s artworks and performances are presented across Europe, North America, and Japan at venues such as Audio Visual Arts, New York, NY/USA, Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, CA/USA, Neutral Ground Contemporary Art Forum, Regina, SK/Canada,Galerie Mark Müller, Zurich/Switzerland, The Sonic Arts Research Centre, Queen’s University Belfast/Northern Ireland, and Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya, Tokyo/Japan. Originally from the southern American state of Georgia, Barrett is now based in New York City. He received his MFA from CalArts | California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA/USA, and his PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo, NY/USA. Barrett was recently a USF Artist-in-Residence in Norway and has received awards from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Franklin Furnace Fund. His critical writing draws from continental philosophy, musicology, art history, queer theory, and post-Marxist thought. His essays have been published in journals such as Postmodern Culture, Contemporary Music Review, Mosaic, and Tacet. His first book, After Sound: Toward a Critical Music, which examines intersections between music, contemporary art, and global politics, was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2016. Barrett was a fellow in the discipline Music/Sound at Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2015/2016.
