Traces

Plain

Xinjun Zhang

Most of Xinjun Zhang’s works take place in the area where he lives. He selects and uses materials based on the experiences of his daily life. He works with found objects like threads, primary school desks, drawers, sleeping bags, and canvas. By examining the objects’ shapes and conditions he looks for the traces and stories bound in the object. When it comes to the process of construction, the focus is on the bodily experience and performative site of the making. Zhang’s video performance Boat takes place in his neighborhood surrounded by a ring of railway lines, once set up for a fast train experiment. He built a wooden boat on wheels, carrying him along the rails – in the opposite direction of the train. The journey stopped after two hours, when the rails were crossed by a frequented transport road.
