Artistic Practice between the Right of Speech and the Copyright

Dima Hourani

In her presentation, Dima Hourani uncovers the impact of neoliberalism on the scenes of art, culture and education, especially how the neoliberal system turned culture into a commodity defined and controlled by market laws. By using examples from daily life, she will expound the different levels of challenges artists are confronted with, thereby outlining the differences between European and non-European models of cultural production. In particular, the discrepancies between the Global North and South, between industrial countries and developing countries, countries that are creating, copying or consuming. Countries of the Global South will function as an illustrative model, to show the circumstances and the policies that control the art scene and to discuss these topics while keeping in mind the hard and unstable situation within artistic practice. In which way do different countries deal with authorship and copyright? What are alternative platforms for artistic practices? How can we get a wider view of production and intervention in cultural scenes? By presenting images and artworks, Dima Hourani will demonstrate artistic justification and illuminate the question in how far the manner and the time of presenting an artwork influence the perception of an artwork, its actual value and the limits for artists to deal with these conditions.
